Maverick tykes and novices remain unbeaten in zone play

Milton's youngest rep lacrosse teams kept their unbeaten records intact last week -- each doing so in convincing fashion.

That was especially true for the tyke Mavericks, who further cemented themselves as the top dogs in Zone 8's Tier 2 ranks with a 13-2 rout in Elora Thursday night.

Now 6-0-1, the local lads have amassed 83 goals this season, while allowing their competition a paltry 14 -- netting two shutouts along the way.

Michael Scarfone led the hit parade with three goals, while tallying twice were Brandon Coulter, John Szabo and Julian Vandervoet. Riley Bergin, Andy Cascagnette, Liam Dick and Scott Martini chipped in singles.

Griffin Ellis-Callow was solid but largely untested between the pipes, with his teammates jumping out to an early lead and putting a hammerlock on their hosts with six goals in the second period.

The lopsided victory followed a championship performance at the Arthur Tournament, with the Mavericks capping their title drive with a 10-1 dismantling of Brampton.

Usual snipers Scarfone and Szabo powered the tykes throughout their three-game run with 14 and 10 goals respectively.

Meanwhile, Milton's novices are a perfect 7-0 in Zone 8's Tier 2 division following a 9-3 toppling of Kitchener's second entry squad at John Tonelli Sports Centre June 24.

Quite dominant themselves and nearly as impressive defensively, they've given up a mere 18 goals -- thanks in equal parts to sturdy cage work by Bailey Brown and some suffocating defence.

Providing the latter in their most recent triumph were Matthew Moore, Connor Little and Carter Taylor, who helped limit the visitors to a single marker until well into the final frame.

Pacing the Mavericks with a hat-trick was Jacob Wickware, while Callum MacGregor potted a pair and Mac Mazzacato, Connor Michailoff, David Scarfone and Justin Whetham scored one apiece.

The novices play host to Elora tonight (Wednesday) while the tykes take on Arthur Thursday. Both games are at Tonelli Arena, starting at 7 p.m.
