Scholarship recipients announced

Seven local graduating students will start their university experiences off on the right foot thanks to scholarships handed out by a local women's organization.

The students were all selected as recipients by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), Milton and District, based on their academic achievement, volunteer work and job experience.

The scholarships are funded each year by the community through the local CFUW's book sale, which has been held for the past 35 years.

The recipients for 2008 are:

  • Alexandra Schembri, from Bishop Reding, $1,200; Schembri was treasurer of the Milton Mayor's Youth Advisory Council. She'll study biology and medical sciences, as well as business at the University of Western Ontario.

  • Allison Wallace, from E.C. Drury, $1,200; Wallace has been the longest-serving member of her high school's student government. She'll study history and global development at Queen's University.

  • Leah Plumley, from Milton District High School, $750; Plumley was president of the student athletic association and took on other executive roles. She'll study health sciences at the University of Western Ontario.

  • Dana Cherniatenski, from Milton District High School, $750; She helped organize a fundraiser at her school for the Canadian Cancer Society. She'll study nursing at McMaster University.

  • Diana Trusz, from E.C. Drury, $750; She's volunteered at the Salvation Army for administrative and general tasks and will study communications at Simon Fraser University in B.C.

  • Genevieve Rushton-Givens, from Milton District, $750; She walked in the Milton Relay for Life three years and sang O Canada at one of them. She'll study vocal music at Wilfred Laurier University.

  • Nicole Noble, from E.C. Drury School for the Deaf, $500; She was on the diversity committee for E.C. Drury High School and will attend Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
