Bryan Gent's days in competitive hockey aren't over yet.

Wrapping up his playing career a little over a year ago now -- after seeing brief stints in both the United Hockey League and Southern Professional Hockey League -- the 27-year-old Miltonian recently signed on as an assistant coach with his hometown IceHawks.

"It's exciting. I'm definitely looking forward to the new season and trying to help the team," said the former Division 3 Oswego Lakers defenceman.

The fact that Gent came through the Tier 2 Jr. A ranks himself -- patrolling the Port Hope Predators' blueline -- and went on to the NCAA makes him a suitable addition to the coaching staff, said team president and co-owner Dean Piett.

"He should be able to relate well with the young players. And him being from Milton is certainly another plus."

Added Gent, "It wasn't that long ago that I sat where these guys are now. I think that gives a little more credibility to what I'm saying. I know what it takes to get to that next level and I want to help these guys get there."

Along with holding the mantle of leadership with the Lakers -- closing out his NCAA tenure as an assistant captain -- the IceHawks' young assistant enjoyed championship experience, with a trip to the national finals in his rookie season.

Milton is still looking to hire two more senior-type assistants sometime in the next few weeks, with their training camp set for mid-August.
