A bell rings, doors slam and hundreds of footsteps clamor against the marble floors. A constant murmur buzzes through the halls like a honey bee to its hive. Shouts can be heard above the noise and the sounds of greetings fill the air. Those walking through the halls vary from the small and meek to the loud and boisterous. All are different; some more similar than others, but we are all here for the same reason: school.

Welcome Mustangs to the 2008-2009 school year. We are well into the semester now; the lack of focus gone with the summer. Now it is time to put our heads into our work. Of course, not without having some fun along the way.

To kick, or rather shoot, the year into being the Mustangs have represented MD well in all of our sports teams. The football teams can be seen training almost every day in the front field and the tennis team can be found hitting a few balls in the gym. However, these teams pale in comparision to the awesome, vivacious Senior Girls Basketball team, whom remain undefeated in their tier. Go Mustangs! All of our teams deserve a pat on the back and support so come and cheer on your fellow students at their games!

Meanwhile, on a more academic side of things, the honour students were celebrated last Thursday night in a ceremony fit to impress. An incredible number of students were awarded for maintaining an overall grade average of 80% or higher. MD was proud to welcome CHCH news anchor Dan McLean as the guest speaker in our celebration of excellence. An overall fantastic evening with entertainment, MD was positively glowing.

In less than a week’s time, forty-three students will be venturing to Germany, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic for a final study of tolerance. Students will visit important tourist attractions such as Auschwitz. To fundraise for this trip, a gala was held on September 26 to the general public. Boasting a fabulous silent auction, catering and MD-bred entertainment the evening was a tremendous success.

THANK YOU to all those who supported the Tools for Tolerance Gala!

Before we sign off for yet another week, we want to remember the moments that our grades ten and twelve students enjoyed on their trip to Wilderness North in Haliburton, Ontario. A week of fun, friendship and memories, WN reminded us why we love going to school and why we are so lucky to have such fabulous teachers and administrative staff. So, so long MD and: Happy Thanksgiving!
