FEBRUARY 1912

For some time a drill for oil has been in operation close to Brandons Pressed Brick & Tile Co.'s works. On Saturday, at a depth of 1,465 feet, oil was struck. A sample was drawn up and proved to be the real thing. On Tuesday afternoon a number of prominent citizens went to see the pumping of a sample. The indicator showed that about 50 feet of the hole drilled had filled up. A tank of oil was drawn up and many samples were carried off. Hopes are strong that a gusher will be developed. In that case the crude oil will be used as fuel at the brick works. For that purpose it is much superior to coal or wood, both of which have to be used where either is used. Crude oil needs no other fuel to help it out. At the Port Credit brick works oil only is used and it is imported from the United States at 3¢ a gallon.

The annual meeting of the Halton Reform Association was held here yesterday. There was a large turnout. There was no weakening on the question of reciprocity, but instead general confidence that the Liberal party will win on that issue at the next general election.

Milton defeated a Brampton seven made up of junior O.H. A. and older players here last Thursday evening, 11 to 5. The game was the roughest ever played here. The visitors, finding themselves outclassed, took to tripping, slashing and holding, and the locals retaliated. Penalties, however, were few. Referee Ryder should have been more strict.

A very fine new Estey organ was opened in the Zimmerman Methodist Church by Dr. Doward (sic), of Toronto, on February 1 in an organ recital. The Dr. showed off the beauty of tone and power of the instrument by his skill in its manipulation. A subscription of about $125 fully covers all the cost, as well as improved lighting for the church and basement.
