The manufacturing facility that produces brake shoes is expected to shut its doors by early next year due to restructuring by its parent company, Affinia Group Inc., which announced the news Tuesday.
The closure is a result of technology changes in the industry, since many vehicles now use four-wheel disc brakes instead of the drum and shoe system, explained Affinia Director of Corporate Communications Scott Howat.
"It's declining in terms of popularity," he noted.
Asked why Affinia isn't converting its Milton location to a disc brake manufacturing facility, Howat said Affinia already has plants that produce disc brakes. The company is also closing down two of its facilities in the United States.
"Affinia people in each location are extremely talented and dedicated, and these closings in no way reflect upon their performance," said John Washbish, president of Affinia's under vehicle group.
"We deeply regret the impact on the lives of our people and their families and will provide assistance where possible during these challenging times."
While specifics on what assistance employees will receive weren't available, Howat said the company will follow what's laid out in labour laws and agreements.
