In a unique move, the Derry Road church has decided not to have a regular morning church service, but to have its members instead go out into the community during that time to serve wherever they can.
“We’re saying, ‘Don’t just go to church, be the church,’” said lead pastor Jack Ninaber.
The congregation will be helping out wherever they can, he said, whether that’s with the food bank, in a nursing home or at the hospital.
The idea, Ninaber said, is to reach out and be a blessing.
Sunday is the finale of Southside’s four-week series entitled ‘Faith in Action.’
The tagline of the series has been “Southside Community Church is moving.”
A question Ninaber has been asking church members to consider throughout the series is “If Southside were to disappear off the face of this community, would it be noticed?”
The series has also been encouraging church members to make a global mark, Ninaber said.
One of the ways participating members did this is by eating only tortillas, beans and rice from November 24 to 28, and by refraining from making any discretionary purchases during those days as a way to understand poverty just a little bit better.
The money participants saved on food and other purchases will be put toward projects in developing countries, Ninaber said.
