Jr. Mustangs still have shot at first Can take over top spot with win today at the Ridge

Milton District’s football juniors have already stuck it to the Georgetown Rebels once this week, and will look to do so again.

That’ll be done in a less direct manner if they can knock off the Iroquois Ridge Wolfpack this afternoon in Oakville. A victory would give the Mustangs a 4-1-1 season, edging them past the Rebels for top spot in the Division 2 East ranks — and giving them home-field advantage for both the quarterfinals and semis.

MD gave itself a shot at first with a 23-12 win over Georgetown Tuesday.

Amidst wicked winds that wiped out either team’s passing game, the Mustangs jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the first half and delivered a couple of big defensive stands down the stretch to hold off their guests’ comeback efforts.

Inside linebacker Alex Ho recovered a fumble in the end-zone for a touchdown in the second quarter — following a botched snap — while other majors were scored by Alex Searle and quarterback Darren Prong.

Ben Miller stood out in the late stages of play, both with some lengthy carries and a few key tackles.

Should they lose today, the Mustangs will drop to third.

The Division 2 quarterfinals are set for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Bishop Reding’s juniors finally reached the end-zone in their regular-season finale last Friday.

Eric Schroeder scored the Royals’ first and only touchdown of the year, a one-yard QB sneak that capped a lengthy drive made possible by some big runs from Johnny Yacoubi.

Unfortunately the score only served as a measure of solace, as BR fell 37-7 to the Notre Dame Irish — putting the finishing touches on an 0-5 campaign that keeps them out of the Division 1 playoffs for a second straight season.
