Mustangs reign supreme at Ottawa tourney Sisters power MD to undefeated weekend; juniors reach finals

The Mustangs’ 2008 dominance stretched well beyond regional borders last weekend.

Tearing up Halton’s AA scene and heavy favourites to take the championship next month — thanks largely to six-foot-four-inch powerhouse Kayla Alexander — Milton District’s senior cagers secured tier two bragging rights at the prestigious St. Matthew Fall Classic in Ottawa.

A 52-38 victory over Cambridge’s Southwood punctuated an unbeaten run for the Mustangs, who’ve now won two tournaments this fall — claiming last month’s Georgetown Invitational.

While Alexander amassed 18 points in the finals and was a force to be reckoned with in the nation’s capital, MD’s championship efforts were far from a one-player show. Younger sister Kesia Alexander claimed Tier 2 MVP honours with an all-around stellar performance — featuring countless assists and big outside shooting — while 11th grader Brittany Tilstra had 14 points against Southwood and continued to make strides as Kayla’s understudy and replacement for next season.

"It was a great team effort and the tournament really helped bind the girls," said head coach Steve Oliver, whose team sits at a perfect 9-0 in Halton’s Richardson Division, with most of their wins delivered in lopsided fashion.

Though not quite enjoying the regular cakewalks they have in league play, the Mustangs won their round-robin games fairly decisively and knocked off Ottawa Valley’s South Greenville 48-36 in the semifinals.

The juniors came close to making it matching tier two titles for MD, winning five straight before falling to St. Joseph’s of St. Thomas 47-36 in the final.

A graduate of Holy Rosary’s perennial championship program, ninth grader Rose Serafini led team scoring in every game, with her offensive efforts slowed down only by a minor ankle injury in the third round.

Tori Adamson provided big rebounding and point guard Sarah Jebbison was another weekend standout for the younger Mustangs.
