Caleb Harrison will return to Brampton court November 17 to be sentenced after he was convicted September 25 of impaired driving causing death and three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Michael Rayment, 44, of Milton, was declared dead at Hamilton General Hospital the day after the July 2, 2005 crash. His organs were donated to others by his family through the Trillium Gift of Life Network.
Four passengers were riding in the cab with Rayment at around 3 a. m. when the vehicle collided with an oncoming Mercedes on Derry Road, near Fifth Line.
The cab was heading eastbound. The westbound Mercedes crossed into oncoming traffic, police said.
Three of the cab’s passengers were treated for minor injuries and released from hospital. The fourth was taken to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital with back injuries. Harrison also suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, but released days later.
The occupants of both cars were pulled from the wreckage by passersby and police just before the vehicles burst into flames.
Halton police said Rayment was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital from Milton District Hospital after the crash, but his condition began to deteriorate rapidly the following day.
A co-worker at Milton Rainbow Taxi, who didn’t wish to be identified, said Rayment was “a super guy” who didn’t have family around Milton so “he adopted the cab office as his family.”
Rayment had driven for the company for several years and his friends “are just devastated,” she said. “He was a good driver and a caring person with a big heart. The drivers all loved him.”
