The under-12 girls soccer team rolled over the Mississauga Falcons, one of only two teams to beat the Tornados this season, 4-0 in the Ontario Cup semifinals. Two weeks before Burlington edged the Waterloo Phoenix 2-1 in the quarter-finals. That game pitted three Tornado players against their former team.
That leaves only Etobicoke as the only obstacle between Burlington and an Ontario Cup title. They were to meet today (Sunday) at 10 a.m. in Vaughan to decide the provincial championship.
"If everyone turns up and we play our game -- stingy defence and passing the ball around -- we're capable of beating anyone," said Tornados coach Neil Schofield. "If we play our best game, we're hard to catch."
Burlington is not unfamiliar with the Etobicoke squad. The Tornados won both meetings last season, though Schofield said their opponents "have vastly improved" since then. They did meet once this year in an early-season exhibition game and played to a scoreless draw, though the Burlington coach said at the time he was still experimenting with his lineup.
The Tornados have been on a roll throughout August. They began the month by winning the Kitchener International Soccer Tournament and improved their league leading record to 9-0-3, having outscored their opponents 38-6.
Then came the semifinal against Mississauga, their biggest rival. Burlington beat the Falcons in last year's League Cup final but the Mississauga paid the Tornados back by knocking them out in the opening round this year.
"They are a very good technical soccer team but we got an early lead and didn't look back," Schofield said. "We played a very good game that day. They all gave 200 per cent."
Members of the team are: Chelsea Collins, Venezia Benvenuto, Erica Hubert, Danielle Lafrance, Grace Grafham, Nakita Schofield, Angie Trojanovic, Victoria Grundy, Nicole Brown, Julie Karn, Gaby Paniccia, Christine Rebus, Dayna Gudaitis, Deanna Larcombe, Samantha Macorin, Maggie Birch, Nicole Berios, head coach Neil Schofield, manager Sandy Dunlop and assistant coach Dennis Karn.
