Halton Region is getting a new commissioner of public works and engineering services.

Regional council recently unanimously approved the appointment of Mitchell D. Zamojc to the position, effective September 2.

With the appointment comes the creation of the newly-formed department of Public Works and Engineering Services, which includes the waste management, engineering and environmental services divisions.

"At Halton Region, our priority is providing high quality services to Halton residents and with Mitch on our senior management team we will continue this tradition," said Regional Chair Gary Carr.

"We are confident that his experience and leadership will bring an added value to our staff and residents."

Both the American Public Works Association and the Ontario Public Works Association have recognized Zamojc as a top leader in the public works field.

Halton CAO Pat Moyle described the new commissioner as "the ideal person" to lead the Public Works and Engineering Services department at the Region.

"Mitch is a seasoned and well-respected leader with 28 years of experience in public works, including over 10 years at the level of commissioner with Peel Region," he said.

As a long-time resident of Halton, Zamojc said he's looking forward to making a contribution to the municipality.

"I am truly honoured to join Halton Region, which has a reputation as an outstanding organization with great staff known for their dedication and commitment to providing services across Halton," he said.

Zamojc will be replacing Mark Meneray, who's the current acting commissioner of planning and public works. Meneray will move to his position of commissioner of legislative and planning services.
