The birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and many people are taking advantage of the warmer temperatures to fix up their homes.
But Halton Regional Police are warning residents -- particularly seniors -- to be cautious of home and property maintenance companies canvassing neighbourhoods to offer their services.
Some of them might be trying to rip homeowners off, offering repairs or maintenance that's unnecessary and costs more than it should.
Police are encouraging residents to refrain from agreeing to services on impulse. They're also advising the following:
There's rarely a need to act immediately on these offers. Almost all reputable companies will allow the customer some thinking time and to purchase the service at a later date for the same price quoted.
Obtain comparison quotes in writing or consult with a trusted and knowledgeable third party.
Spend a few minutes researching the company and its reputation. Get references and check warranties.
Never pay in full until the work is complete. Ten per cent of the total estimate is a fair down payment.
